Fields of STEM

The fields of STEM encompass a wide variety of disciplines, each offering its own set of career possibilities. Science is the study of the natural world, focusing on topics such as biology, chemistry, physics and ecology. Students who pursue a degree in science may go on to become researchers in any of these fields or use their knowledge to create innovative products or services. Technology involves using scientific principles to develop tools and devices for practical purposes. It includes fields such as robotics, computer programming, electrical engineering and more. Those studying technology have the potential to work in many industries from aeronautics to video game design.

Engineering focuses on designing and building structures or systems that meet specific needs. It includes disciplines such as civil engineering, mechanical engineering and petrochemical engineering among others. It is an ideal field for those interested in solving complex problems through creative thinking and problem-solving skills. Finally, mathematics is the study of numbers, equations and formulas which can be used to solve real-world problems by using logic and reasoning. Those pursuing mathematics may go on to become mathematicians or statisticians or even use mathematical concepts in other industries such as finance or marketing.

No matter which field they choose within STEM studies, high school students have access to an array of career paths that are both lucrative and rewarding. They can gain valuable experience by participating in internships while still in school; learn from industry professionals through workshops; attend conferences; research current trends; read journals; join online forums; shadow experts in the field; visit manufacturing plants; network with leaders in their chosen discipline; take part in competitions; take classes outside their major; volunteer at relevant organizations – all experiences that will help them develop the skills needed for a successful career post-graduation.
